Political Communication of Umi Sardjono in Struggling for Female Workers in 1960-1970
Abstract
In commemorating the events of September 30, 1965, a number of media
often remind us of the dark and dark history of our Republic, the Unitary State of
the Republic of Indonesia.
Every year the mass media always publish news about the G30SPKI,
including Tempo Magazine. Tempo magazine on the 30th of September made a
special report on “Umi Sardjono and Stigma Gerwani” on the 2nd October 2021
Edition. Other media reports were similar, meaning they also discussed the events
of the September 30th Movement (Gestapu) in their reports.
The media setting agenda regarding the events of the September 30th
Movement (Gestapu) attracted the writer’s attention, especially ahead of October
1, 2022, so we consider this issue interesting to be reviewed, especially the theme
written by Tempo about the General Chairperson of Gerwani Umi Sardjono.
Therefore, we consider it reasonable that Tempo was considered by some
circles as pro-PKI. However, it is possible for Tempo to explain history using the
editorial policy. Based on some of the problems above, we decided that the purpose
of our research is to find out how Umi Sardjono’s Political Communication in
Struggling for Women Workers in 1960-1970, by conducting Historical research
and Framing Analysis of Umi Sardjono’s Articles as General Chair of Gerwani in
a number of media in particular. Tempo Magazine. - 20 -
The theory used in this research is the Agenda Setting Theory. with a
qualitative approach, while the nature of the research is descriptive, with the
framing analysis method Zhondang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki.
The results of this study are expected to show that the main frame of the
special report “Umi Sardjono and Stgima Gerwani” in Tempo Magazine and
other media tends to be neutral and explains how Umi Sardjono’s Political
Communication in Struggling for Women Workers in 1960-1970 as a phoneme
that was not recorded in history.
Our study was carried out in at least two parts, namely seven stories from
nine news texts published in the media in which the writings were neither in favor
of nor against the PKI. The seven news headlines were: (1) Umi Sardjono and
Stigma Gerwani, (2) From Putri Priayi to Underground Activists, (3) Disbanding
Before the Determination Congress, (3) Dogmatic Women in Two Councils, (3)
Singing Signs Danger, (4) Burden of Trauma from the 1965 Incident. Two other
stories are entitled (5) Sluggish in front of the Bung and Gerwani, (6) Sukarno
and Polygamy etc.
Based on a number of news stories, there are seven news stories that explain
about Umi Sardjono’s struggle for women’s rights, including Umi Sardjono and
Stigma Gerwani, From Putri Priayi to Underground Activists, Disbanding the
Way Before the Determination Congress, Dogmatic Women in Two Councils,
Singing Danger Signs, Trauma Burden of Events 1965 and two news stories with
the titles Sluggish in Front of the Bung and Gerwani, Sukarno and Polygamy.
