Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study explores the representation of fatherhood in the film Cahaya Dari Timur: Beta Maluku as a reflection of contemporary masculinity dynamics in Indonesia. The background of this study is based on the growing portrayal of fathers in the media, which not only reflects social change but also challenges traditional norms of masculinity. Using John Fiske's semiotic method, this research analyzes the representation of fatherhood elements on three semiotic levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings reveal that elements of emotional closeness, provision, endowment, and protection form a complex and diverse portrayal of fatherhood. On the reality level, the emotional connection between the main character, Sani, and the children around him demonstrates emotional closeness, strengthened through physical interaction and body language. On the representation level, cinematographic techniques such as medium-full shots depict the role of the father as a source of affection and provider of children’s material needs. On the ideological level, Sani is shown to use soccer as a symbol of peace and protection from religious conflict in Maluku. This research reveals that the film serves not only as a reflection of fatherhood experiences but also as a medium to challenge and expand public understanding of masculinity and the evolving role of fathers. Thus, this study contributes to the discussion on the shifting role of fathers in the post-feminist era within the Indonesian societal context specifically its eastern culture.
